Starting September 15, 2023, work to upgrade portions of the trail system and install controlled crossings at four crosswalks will get underway as part of a two year project.

Budgeted at $1,061,700, this project is funded, in part, by the Government of Canada through the Active Transportation Fund, covering 60% of the total costs.

Taking place over the 2023/2024 construction season, this project involves the rehabilitation and widening of approximately 1.8 kilometers of multi-use asphalt pathways at Deby Park, Peace Park, and along the Lion's West Valley Trail. Access to the trail systems will be closed to the public while work is being completed in these areas.

Other activities include the installation of four sets of LED crosswalk signs along high-traffic routes (two of which will be in a school zone) to connect existing pathways and sidewalks. Pathways will be widened by two meters to reduce barriers and enable persons with mobility challenges to use these routes.

The rehabilitation of pathway systems and the implementation of new crosswalk features will provide inclusive, safe, and barrier-free transit routes, improve safety, usability, and accessibility on major town roads to provide safe connections between the Town’s existing pathway system and crosswalk infrastructure. The rehabilitated pathways will function as key active transportation links between neighbourhoods, parks, and educational, social, and economic hubs in Drayton Valley, and will offer residents the means to walk, jog, or cycle to school or work, or for recreational enjoyment.
