From September 12th to October 6th, 2023, The Town of Drayton Valley conducted a digital community engagement to gather public feedback on municipal budget priorities. The Town uses public needs and wants as well as delivery cost information to make decisions about budget funding. The funding priorities were organized into 14 existing budget areas.

Participants (all anonymous) were asked to provide feedback on each funding priority through a budget spend slider and a public commenting forum. They were also asked to weigh the importance of each budget item.

The 221 validated participants collectively indicated their desire to keep taxes the same in 12 of the 14 budget areas. In General Administration, the overall desire was to decrease the budget by 1% and in Town Council, the overall desire was to decrease the budget by 3%. The level of consensus and support for the collective budgets was reasonably high in most of the 14 areas.

Participant comments (202 in total) revealed several clusters of particular interest to the community.

  • Funding Public Services: Several participants expressed concerns about the allocation of funds to various public services and suggested prioritizing spending to address community needs effectively.
  • Library Facilities: Many comments revolved around the need for improved library facilities, including calls for larger spaces, improved children's sections, and better resources.
  • Infrastructure and Maintenance: There were concerns about the state of infrastructure, maintenance of roads, sidewalks, and walking paths, as well as issues like line painting quality and road repairs.
  • Policing and Community Safety: A significant number of comments focused on concerns about policing, with some advocating for more budget for public safety and others expressing dissatisfaction with law enforcement's effectiveness.
  • Community Engagement and Participation: several comments emphasized the importance of community engagement, suggesting that decisions should be made with input from residents. This theme also includes discussions about the role of town council and council compensation.
